On 5 May the Hermanus Photographic Society (HPS) held its regular monthly competition via Zoom. Ably judged by Daniel Reddie of the club, this month’s set subject, set months ago, being “Weather” was accompanied during the judging by severe rain storms and flooding. Hopefully next month’s set subject “Minimalism” will see no such side effects.
Winner of the set subject was Phil Sturgess with his “Backs to the Storm” and in second place was “Tempestuous Skies over Kaokoland” by Treurnicht du Toit, again both apt for the occasion.
This month’s senior image award winner and also with a merit ward was “Scottish Wind Turbines” by Carina de Klerk, but close with Elizma Fourie’s “I Will Kick You in the Face” getting the identical score and also a certificate of merit.
The club again reported significant success in both national and international salons with some eight certificates of merit being obtain from the various salons, and internationally this was exceeded by no less than two gold medals and a bronze medal, as well as two honourable mentions award for club members. What is remarkable for a relatively small photographic club is that this year to date within the truly competitive international competitions members have obtained no less than five gold medals.
But that was not the only success for the club as on 1 May the club was part of Art in the Park along with 68 other local artists associated sellers and in doing not only ran out of club application forms also sold some 16 photographs. This will be a regular monthly event for the club on the first Sunday of every month from 9am at the Cricket Ground (Hermanus Country Market).
Last month was perhaps its last meeting over Zoom in “virtual” conditions as it is planned from next month, on the 2 June 2021 to return to monthly meeting at the Dutch Reformed Church in Church Street Hermanus.
