The Hermanus Photographic Society made history at its August competition evening when Stefan Botha, a learner at Hermanus High School, was named Overall Winner — the first time a youth photographer has claimed this top honour in the club’s history.
Judged by Cape Town-based master photographer Kim Stevens, the competition drew 80 entries, including 18 submissions for the Set Subject theme “A Cityscape at Night.”

Stefan’s macro photograph Colour Wheel captivates with its vibrant colour palette and striking structure. A vivid yellow crab spider is sharply focused on the curled petals of a purple flower. “The circular shape of the flower and the graphic triangles of the spider’s legs all contribute to a striking image,” said Kim.
Entered in the Photojournalism category, Gavin Whiteford was recognised for his image The Lunch Break winning the Senior Image of the Month.
“A poignant image with thoughtful framing,” Kim noted. “The subject’s posture, the surrounding tools, and his direct gaze create an immediate and compelling connection with the viewer.”

Phil Sturgess claimed the Set Subject win with Harbour Lights, a beautifully timed shot taken at the V&A Waterfront during blue hour. “It’s a well-executed cityscape,” Kim remarked. “The reflections create a mirror-like effect — beautifully abstracted by the gentle movement of the water, doubling the visual impact.”
A new chapter for Learning & Development
HPS President Carina de Klerk also shared exciting news about the year ahead. “Early in the year we increased our focus on learning and development. This will now culminate in appointing a dedicated committee member responsible for this portfolio.” The programme will follow a structured three-pronged approach:
1. Training
- Workshops, presentations, and hands-on outings to build photographic skills.
2. Peer Discussion
- Supportive critique and conversation at our quarterly Camera Café sessions.
3. Creative Challenge
- Set Subject competitions to follow each learning theme, allowing members to apply what they’ve learned in creative ways.
